Walmart Crime Report October 2019
Walmart had at least thirteen shootings on the premises, or one might be just beyond the parking lot, killing at least five people, and injuring several more. (This was initially reported with only twelve shootings; however, one more at Sam's Club has been added bringing the total to thirteen, counting a shooting of a dog off the premises that resulted from a swatting incident described below it's fourteen.) They also had at least three more related to Walmart including a shoplifting incident where the suspect allegedly called 911 to report a man with a gun at another location where police shot a dog, and arrested two people on outstanding warrants even though the report turned out to be false and they suspect it was a distraction so the shoplifter could get away.
There were two more shooting incidents where suspects threatened to shoot up Walmart or kill someone there; one that led to a police stand-off before the suspect could get to an unnamed Walmart the other involved a phone call to corporate office where the person taking the call reported hearing shots during it, and suspect admitted the shootings. Three of the fatal shootings were by police, including one of a murder suspect, unrelated to Walmart, and one was a suicide. several of them were related to domestic disputes or robberies.
To get a monthly Walmart shooting count I usually include all the ones that take place on the premises or as a result of crime that began at the store, this would include twelve, on the premises this month and one that involved the police shooting of a dog as a result of the alleged false report but not the two angry people threatening to shoot it up without making it there, bringing the total for this month to fourteen. This makes it one hundred and eighteen for the year with two months to go. This is tied with the second highest for a year and only five below the record which is one hundred and twenty one, virtually guaranteeing they'll set a new record by end of November with the worst month for shootings, most of the time to go. Since I show articles to each shooting anyone that wants to check the facts can apply their own criteria.
There was another shooting that actually took place last month, but wasn't reported for a few weeks, which is happening more often than it used to, perhaps in some cases, they just omit references to Walmart so it doesn't turn up in searches, which might be part of effort to downplay their high crime problems. Hard evidence of this conclusion is limited, but there's plenty of circumstantial evidence.
Walmart also had over a dozen other gun related crimes including several armed robberies and threats to shoot the store up which weren't carried out, an attempted carjacking, and one that turned out to be a BB gun from a disgruntled customer that just said he wanted to return it, although employees said otherwise. One of these armed robberies lead to a police chase, crashing into both the deputy and another driver killing that person as well. There was one other death as a result of an accident and a body found in NJ parking lot, with a total death toll of at least eight.
The police shot another innocent man with a stun gun in Georgia, which is the same state they reported last month that a previous two hour stand off on the highway with another suspected shoplifter also turned out to be the wrong guy, in both cases they were still charged with obstructing justice of failure to obey a police officers, even though they had no way of knowing why they were arbitrarily being accused of something they didn't do, or even knew why they were being targeted by police. Both cases were also minorities.
Another police officer in Arizona was arrested on charges of shoplifting, which they're far more likely to be charged with than police misconduct or excessive force. Abuse the public, and there's little or no accountability but steal from Walmart or another oligarch and they're quickly charged.
Police were slow to investigate an alleged assault that took place five months ago, and is only being re-investigated within the past few weeks. However, they often investigate petty thefts like taking handful of snacks without paying for them, if loss prevention finds out about it by reviewing tapes, which means we often have to spend more on criminal charges then the cost of the products, even while Walmart is suppressing wages with the help of politicians they donate campaign money to.
This might be why most people consider this a rigged economy.
A Delaware man allegedly arbitrarily began choking a cashier without provocation in Florida. This adds to an enormous amount of evidence that while the people in the corporate office are taking the vast majority of the profits the employees that have their wages suppressed are the ones taking all the risks.
Of course they don't donate to campaigns, not that that has anything to do with it.
They reported a scam where someone is allegedly trying to steal from OTHER CUSTOMERS, not Walmart by scanning in a gift card at the self-checkout then walking out without paying for it. They claim he's trying to trick the next person to use the self-checkout into paying for it, instead of saying that Walmart checkout system is enabling them and that Walmart should be the ones liable not the next customer! They're doing a similar thing with truck drivers in Kentucky where they have small signs saying there's no parking and when Truck drivers, don't notice them they get booted and charged hundreds of dollars to have them removed by a for-profit private contractor hired by Walmart. when local farmers started warning truckers instead of posting it with bigger signs they tried to intimidate the farmers.
They also had at least four kidnappings or attempted kidnappings, mostly clustered in the last couple days of the month with one of them six days earlier. This is probably only slightly above average for the month but well above average for the last weekend.
In addition to the two fatal crashes, Walmart also had close to a dozen or more crashes, chases, hit and runs, or automobile fires. Many of these were major crashes with serious injuries. Several of them were following shoplifting's or robberies.
One of those crashes was a police officer that was responding o a call about an knife attack at Walmart, although the suspect wasn't in the crash; this was one of at least half a dozen knife related crimes with most involving threats or slashing that din't make contact, but at least one included a stabbing.
Walmart also had at least half a dozen fires mostly arson, including one that was intended to distract from a shoplifting, which almost never works, although it's starting to happen almost every month now. Another person was sentenced to fifteen years in jail last month for starting a fire last year so he could steal beer. They usually also charge restitution, which Walmart is constantly pushing, but even if they awarded that it comes to $1.2 million in this case so the purpose for this wouldn't be to get the money since it would never be paid but to ensure that he never has any money legally again.
This is supposedly as a deterrent, although it's only applied to poor people from their crimes not to wealthy well-connected people involved in white collar crimes. If the goal was to minimize future crimes they would think it through more carefully often trying to eliminate causes of crime like a rigged economy or lack of reasonable employment opportunities; but of course the goal is to create a government b=y the corporations and for the corporations.
There were dozens if not hundreds of other crimes including many assaults, shoplifting, purse snatching and much more; as usual some of the people most likely to be attacked are often employees or police responding to their massive shoplifting problem. It doesn't take a genius to realize that their store design, corner cutting, and union busting policies are major contributing factors to their high crime problems; however the only thing the corporate office seems to care about is maximizing profits regardless of how much danger their policies seem to put both customers & workers. Politicians and media seems to be more concerned with collecting campaign donations or advertising dollars than trying to draw attention to solutions that would work.
Walmart always has at least several recalls or reports of problems with their merchandise every month, most of which are't reported widely; but this month seems to be even higher than usual with close to a dozen high profile articles. They had recalls for 6,000 pounds of sausage patties, exercise equipment, J&J baby powder and a couple recalls of Zantac. They also had hats that got the local teams name wrong, complaints about tampered pills, ground beef that had glass in it, and and a pair of child's sneakers that supposedly had a razor blade in it.
This is simply not a new problem and they go through many of the same recalls over an over again, but then cut corners again leading to more problems. the same corner cutting to increase profits causing their high crime problems is causing many other problems as well.
Now Walmart want to take their practices into the health care industry, and they have a lot of support on Wall Street and in the media to help with their propaganda. They're opening a growing number of clinics and creating alliances with major health care companies consolidating into Oligarchies with little accountability, like the retail sector.
In some cases this is combined with their efforts to influence the education field as well which is a disaster; for the past year or so they've been promising what they call a college education for a dollar a day; now they're including medical training in this program. But when they don't tell you at first is that it's an online college and that existing ones like K-12 that have been around longer have proven to be a disaster, with much less personal contact or help with lessons. This may not be much, if any better than research you can do online for free, which can be very effective for self-motivated people but most people need more advice than that. Those that don't will see through this scam.
Walmart is also involved in a larger number of lawsuits than usual, which is a lot. They've lost a few and even under Trump the EEOC is filing some suits against them. there are still many judges that are friendly to their oppressive policies but others are overturning some of their rulings, which're so outrageous. the constant revolving door with other corporations often that they're supposedly competing against continues to turn every month almost without exception with half a dozen executives moving to or from Walmart.
They're becoming a leader in high tech thanks to alliances with many advanced technology corporations or buying them up with a growing number of patents for Drones artificial intelligence, robots, and data scientists often to spy on customers and workers. there's little or no input from privacy rights advocates on these policies nor is the public being told about it except in a large number of articles that are scattered in low profile locations most people don't read so they won't be able to figure out how it impacts them.
They have media outlets trying to portray them the victim of union bullying despite fact that their practices are legendary suppressing workers rights. they've been caught charging double or more for bottle deposits in California. they've been censoring their own ads, to cover up guns while ignoring other contributing causes of violence. And they're using market power to extract fees from sellers using their online store, although Amazon is even worse about this. There's little or no doubt that the free enterprise system was eliminated years if not decades ago replaced with an oligarchy system.
One of the most blatant signs that the oligarchy system is breaking down is an absurd shortage on dish soap that they supposedly have according to signs they've been putting in their aisles, although most reports say that there's plenty of soap on the shelves. As absurd as it sounds I'm not ruling out possibility they might be trying to encourage people to buy soap up as part of an experiment for marketing purposes.
They had at least two women in two different states bite police officers while they were trying to arrest them, and another sixty year-old women was caught bottomless in her care with legs in the air, well masturbating. she didn't bite the police that I know of but did resist.
Another man high on PCP broke into a closed Walmart to use hair clippers to carve a $2 dollar pumpkin before being arrest.
And supposedly "voodoo" made a Texas man shoplift at Walmart.
This isn't unprecedented; they've had people going on rampages because they were told to by a "Hookah smoking rabbit" or becasue tehy were being chased by "zombies" during the "Apocalypse" and many more strange things.
I didn't have to make these things up.
Strange things happen at Walmart!
In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in October 2019. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.
