OWS: May Day, Charter Schools, support reoccupation! etc.

May 1st Blockade Called For New York Bridges, Tunnels, and Ferries — Commuter Delays Expected

NEW YORK – On May 1, 2012, autonomous direct action groups within Occupy Wall Street, as a part of the global mobilizations for general strike and economic non-compliance, will block one or more Manhattan-bound bridges or tunnels to protest the shameful opulence of the 1%. Working and unemployed people across this country have seen no improvement to their lives in spite of all of the chatter about a recovery from the Financial Crisis of 2008. We don’t care what Obama or Romney say because only working people —domestic laborers, rank and file union members, undocumented workers, restaurant, retail and chain-store workers— can solve today’s problems.
Last fall, when Occupy Wall Street blocked the Brooklyn Bridge for several hours, we were acting within a long line of protest in New York City that stretches back to the so-called Fiscal Crisis of 1975, which much like now, was a bank led assault against working people. In the summer of 1975, striking hospital employees, including doctors and nurses, blocked the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was even blocked by thousands of laid-off police, the very people who act as the guard dogs of the 1%. More recently, both the Brooklyn Bridge and the Holland Tunnel were shut down during protests of the shooting death of Sean Bell. But this May 1, we will create the biggest shut down the city of New York has ever seen.

We are announcing these blockades now as a fair warning to the rest of the working people of New York and New Jersey who are considering joining the strikes and mobilizations of the day: the city will be shut down, so enjoy the day without the 99%! original article additional May Day protests updates

Occupy Wall Street has been preparing for a large month of protests starting on May 1st. This has apparently led to Barack Obama’s decision to hold his summit at Camp David where he won’t be so close to the protests as part of his effort to downplay and ignore the Occupy Wall Street movement. This is a clear indication of the fact that the government is paying little attention to the will of the people as any sincere democracy is supposed to do; which is all the more reason why we should make an effort on our own to support the OWS movement and spread the word among ourselves. The corporate media clearly can’t be trusted to report on this in an accurate manner; this includes the seemingly more liberal MSNBC network.
This is part of a semi-regular update of some of the latest stories from the Occupy Wall Street web page for additional details see previous post introduction to series.

Occupy Piccolo! Chicago Communities Occupy School In Protest of Privatization

The Brian Piccolo Specialty School in Humboldt Park, Chicago is currently Occupied by parents, teachers, and students. Occupy Chicago and other allies are outside the building in solidarity and have set up an encampment. Around one hundred people are present and are taking shifts to ensure the safety of the occupation. The Chicago Teachers Union has expressed support for the action. Piccolo, an elementary school with a student body that is almost entirely from low income communities of color, is one of 16 Chicago public schools slated to be closed by Mayor Rahm's service cuts to the poor…… Full article

This is actually an old post from February but it is important enough that it shouldn’t be forgotten. This is part of a major effort to corporatize schools and enable the people in the board rooms at Wall Street to control the education that is provided to children and either restricts it if it serves their purposes or turns it into propaganda. Another part of the effort at corporatization of schools is the effort to increase advertising in schools which has been research by several academics including Susan Linn who wrote the following:

In-school advertising began escalating in earnest in 1990. It now includes (but isn’t limited to) corporate-sponsored newscasts, field trips, classroom materials, vending machines, gymnasiums, walls, and whole buildings. Have you visited your child’s school lately? Perhaps she’s learning about energy production and consumption through the lens of companies like Exxon Mobil or professional associations like the American Coal Foundation (“Unlocking Coal’s Potential through Education”). Her inspiration for reading may be coming from Pizza Hut-complete with coupons to be redeemed at your local franchise. She may be attending mandatory assemblies where she can learn about job interviewing from McDonalds. If she lives in Washington, D.C., and wants to go into the hotel business, she might be attending the Marriot Hospitality Charter School. If she’s a kid in trouble, she could attend a Burger King Academy.

If she’s on a school athletic team, her shoes may come from Nike or Adidas. Her school’s scoreboard could owe its presence to the countless bottles of Coke or Pepsi she’s bought from school vending machines and a sport company logo. Access to her opinions and ideas may have been sold to a market research company. Her only exposure to current events might be brought to her courtesy of the aforementioned Ed Winter. He’s the guy who thought of Channel One, the twelve-minute news program that includes two minutes of commercials that her school is obligated to show daily for 90 percent of the school days each year. (Susan Linn "Consuming Kids" 2004 p.75-6)

They have indicated with their actions that they may attempt to use people that have been portrayed as consumer advocates to advance this agenda, like Elizabeth Warren, who has indicated that she support Charter Schools and as I have indicated previously may not be a sincere consumer advocate. Other Researchers have also looked into the effect that advertisers have on children at an early age including Roy Fox author of “Harvesting Minds” which indicates that Channel One is being used for propaganda purposes not education. there is much more to their efforts to control the educations system and ensure that it is maintained for the benefit of the ruling class and the rest get a second tier system; this hasn’t been openly acknowledged but a close look at many similar activities clearly indicates the intentions of those in power.
The following is a link that was pointed out on the OWS page with a couple articles worth taking notice of:

Arne Duncan and the Chicago Success Story: Myth or Reality?

When ex-President Bush was elected in 2000, he brought with him former Houston Superintendent of Education Rod Paige to be Secretary of Education. He also brought the "Texas miracle"—supposedly increased test scores attributed to Texas' strict accountability system. All eyes smiled on Texas as those measures quickly became part of No Child Left Behind, passed into law in 2001 by both political parties. Before the end of Bush's first term, Paige would leave in disgrace, thanks to revelations of cooked scores, forced-out students, and other barely legal means of inflating test results. ……

The Corporatization of Public Education

Before an audience of big-city mayors and school superintendents in late March, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan offered an early - and troubling - indication of his vision for the future of public K-12 education in the United States. Duncan told audience members at the Mayors' National Forum on Education in Washington, DC, that more mayors need to take control of low-performing, urban school districts, and that he was prepared to do whatever it takes to shift leadership of urban districts from school boards to City Halls. "I'll come to your cities. I'll meet with your editorial boards. I'll talk with your business communities," Duncan said. "I will be there." ……. full articles

Occupy Earth Day!
Jazz Funeral for the death of Earth as we know it 12pm Noon BP Gas Station, 300 Lafayette St (@ Houston), NYC Occupy Earth Day will begin with a New Orleans-style jazz funeral march for the Gulf Coast led by the Rude Mechanical Orchestra and commemorating the anniversary of the BP Deep Water Horizon oil spill, which began on April 20, 2010. Earth day has come and gone by now but it is important to keep in mind that the corporations and the government are clearly not doing anything to repair the damage that ahs been done let alone even slow down the destruction that continues. Some of them may provide some propaganda intended to indicate that they’re doing so but a close look indicates that this isn’t so. The Occupy Wall Street movement and the Green Party have both demonstrated that they’re much more sincere on this subject as I have previously indicated in my comments about Natural Born Killers of the Planet and my attempt to take a closer look at Jill Stein which clearly indicates that she is far more qualified than the candidates considered viable by the corporate media.

Four Ways to Support Re-Occupation

As the weather warms across much of the world, Occupiers are retaking public space. Even after we were violently removed from many of our home encampments last fall and winter, we never stoped organizing - and now we are back outside. With the rebirth of spring, re-occupation has begun in earnest.

For a full week, Wall Street - the original target of our indignation - has been #Occupied. Thanks in part to a 2000 decision by a federal court in Manhattan, protesters are legally allowed to sleep on the sidewalk, as long as they don't block building entrances or take up more than half of the sidewalk. Occupiers have used similar tactics to occupy sidewalks in cities like Tucson since last year, while Occupy D.C were among the first Occupiers to use sidewalk sleeping in front of banks earlier this month. Empowered by the federal court ruling, #SleepfulProtest first came to New York as a way to escape constant police harassment at Occupy Union Square and soon spread to the heart of the financial district. This new tactic allows us to rebuild the face-to-face community and constant public presence that were so crucial to the Occupation of Liberty Square, without the complex logistics of maintaining a permanent encampment. Our new Occupations are mobile, viral, and targeted right at the heart of the 1%'s power. …… Full article

Without support from as many people as possible the Occupy Wall Street will eventually fizzle like the Tea Party; I don’t expect this to happen but how much success it does have depends on how much support they receive from the public. One of the things that any movement needs is money however this should always come with accountability and in a grass roots movement I wouldn’t consider this as important as the contribution of time and ideas as well as any new ways to protest. One of the methods that I have been recommending is to stand up to planned obsolescence and deceptive advertising by not buying things that aren’t necessary and when it comes to necessities saving receipts and demanding accountability when products turn out to break down much sooner than they should; I have indicated in Loud complaint brings quick free replacements that simply by speaking out in front of other customers about the details of the fact that merchandise falls apart faster than it used to that it will encourage corporations to replace it fast before they interfere with the other customers and put them on notice that if they go to far consumers won’t be so complacent.

There is always more where this came from at the OWS web site; at least until we have a sincere reform effort and even then it will still be necessary for the public to continue to stay alert.

(For more information on Blog see Blog description and table of context for most older posts.)

The following are the original replies when this was first posted on Open Salon.

It's incredibly encouraging to see the Occupy movement waking up again. I love the idea of occupying sidewalks. There's something incredibly energizing about a large segment of the population that simply refuses to be sheep like the corporate elite wants them to.

Danny Weil wrote an excellent series of articles awhile back documenting some of the awful stuff Arne Duncan and Obama have done to the public schools. It was Weil who first widely reported the condition Obama imposed on states to qualify for school stimulus money - they had to pass legislation transferring more public school monies to charter schools.

Dr Stuart Jeanne Bramhall April 21, 2012 02:14 AM

Stuart, agreed although the most important things should follow or accompany it; the public needs to be better educated about the issues and they need to control the system then it will no longer be necessary to sit on the sidewalk while those in power try to ignore them.

The people on the sidewalks should move into the legislature without forgetting where they came from.

zacherydtaylor April 21, 2012 09:26 AM

[r] this is inspiring, Zachd!!! thank you!!!!

the corporatization of schools is sub-basement evil. gutting teachers' pays and corporations trying to get federal money for education for their own aggrandizement at the expense of kids.

the advertising feature is nauseating. and the propaganda to be shoved out at the kids is outrageous.

The demonization of teachers, like the demonization of unions, like the demonization of single payer people as "socialists" (like the totally backward demonization of obama from the right that unfortunately doesn't even fit him) ... is so far out of hand. Titillating schandenfreude so nobody gets nuttin'. In some people's warped hearts better that everybody suffers including the nation's children. always believe the worst. and the media is so dirty and craven with all of this. change we don't and can't believe in.

I am heartened to hear OWS spirit once again! Thank you. I hope more and more people join in and have their backs.

best, libby

libbyliberalnyc April 23, 2012 02:46 AM

Libby, a lot of the demonization of Obama is unjustified and absurd, while the legitimate criticism of Obama is downplayed or ignored; this enables him to portray himself as the one that is standing up to the fanatics. However this won’t stand up if scrutiny which is ignored by the Mass Media, is applied; the fact that he supports Charter Schools and other methods to indoctrinate kids and that he’s taking a record breaking amount of money from the corporations should clearly indicate his lack of sincerity.

The growing protests by Occupy Wall Street, as well as other unrelated organizations is providing an indication that many people aren’t being fooled.

You may have noticed that the latest are a bunch of people in wheel chairs protesting cuts to Medicare and instead of allowing them to carry out their protests they arrested them; there were pictures of cops lining up to put handicapped people in handcuffs so that they can indirectly protest tax cuts for those that are looting the country.

OWS: War alternatives, Anarchy propaganda, The Black Agenda

Occupy Wall Street is continuing their protest while the Mass Media sleeps or focuses on the obsession du jour. As some of you may have noticed if you’ve been reading regularly, I haven’t been limiting these stories to ones from OWS, nor do I feel that I should. There are many other grass roots organizations with a common cause fighting for the best interest of the public and I have recently found a web page that seems to be well above par as far as I can see, this is “the Black Agenda” and I think they’re worth a closer look so I included several of their stories.

This is part of a semi-regular update of some of the latest stories from the Occupy Wall Street web page for additional details see previous post’s introduction to series.

Here are some of the stories from both OWS and TBA that don’t fit the agenda of the Mass Media:

The People's Summit: Alternatives to War & Poverty

NATO war makers are preparing to meet in Chicago on May 20-21 following the meeting of the G8 heads of state behind the fortified walls of Camp David.

By contrast, the People's Summit invites community groups, labor unions, anti-racist organizers, Occupy activists, environmentalists, faith leaders, immigrant rights activists and anyone else committed to social justice to a grassroots, bottom-up forum of, by and for the 99 percent.

There will be large plenary sessions as well as more than 40 workshops that will provide everyone the opportunity to engage in a dialogue about the many pressing issues facing our world today. Full article

The political establishment doesn’t seem to think any problems can be solved unless it involves either making an enormous profit for the most well connected people in society or killing people that disagree, with them with the appropriate propaganda to justify it of course. This may be an obvious exaggeration but it isn’t nearly as much of an exaggeration as most of us would wish. Many people have tried to provide an enormous amount of better ideas to many of our problems; however whenever they contradict the fiscal ideology of those in power they’re routinely relegated to the fringes or the academic world without many if any opportunities to get their message across to the majority of the public. I’m not the only one that has attempted to address these problems, however I cite my own blogs, many of which are now listed on the left of the screen, since they’re the ones I’m most familiar with and they do include many other sources with better credentials than me.

Occupy Wall Street's anarchist roots

Almost every time I'm interviewed by a mainstream journalist about Occupy Wall Street I get some variation of the same lecture:

"How are you going to get anywhere if you refuse to create a leadership structure or make a practical list of demands? And what's with all this anarchist nonsense - the consensus, the sparkly fingers? Don't you realize all this radical language is going to alienate people? You're never going to be able to reach regular, mainstream Americans with this sort of thing!"

If one were compiling a scrapbook of worst advice ever given, this sort of thing might well merit an honourable place. After all, since the financial crash of 2007, there have been dozens of attempts to kick-off a national movement against the depredations of the United States' financial elites taking the approach such journalists recommended. All failed. It was only on August 2, when a small group of anarchists and other anti-authoritarians showed up at a meeting called by one such group and effectively wooed everyone away from the planned march and rally to create a genuine democratic assembly, on basically anarchist principles, that the stage was set for a movement that Americans from Portland to Tuscaloosa were willing to embrace. Full article

This is a common problem thanks to the enormous amount of propaganda that has been drilled into the heads of the public for many years and it doesn’t just apply to the misrepresentation of Anarchy. The current establishment uses the same tactics to define many other ideologies including their own. Most if not all ideologies are quite complex when you get into the details of them and they often require some degree of flexibility if people are going to avoid turning it into a cult ideology that is controlled by the leaders and contradictory beliefs are handed out to the followers depending on the circumstances. When it comes to the beliefs that they present for themselves they of course focus on the best aspects even if they don’t stand up to scrutiny; and of course when it comes to the beliefs of their opposition they focus on the worst and often distort them. When checking with the source I have often found that the people of any given belief system out of power don’t actually adopt the version as defined by the establishment. Anarchism is no exception; I first encountered several statements from Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky and later found some material the Anarchist themselves who write at Anarchist Writers and found that they were nothing like their portrayed. In fact while checking this site as I write I find they have an article near the top of their front page about The Age of Empathy; this isn’t unusual and at many other times they have been involved in non-violent protest against war while the so-called civilized establishment has been promoting war and down playing “collateral damage,” with lame justification.

Furthermore when it comes to gathering a list of demands from all the people and speaking for common beliefs, this is no easy task. It takes a lot of effort to enable people to speak for themselves and it is also necessary to make the appropriate education and information available to them so that they have the resources to develop rational beliefs. This takes time and effort. The representatives of the establishment routinely claim to speak for the people but they skip this step and routinely misrepresent the will of the people.

As I have been saying in several posts I don’t think that we should limit our choices for political office to those that the corporate media present to us. There are many candidates at the local level that could and should deserve a closer look in many areas and I advise you to check your own area to see if some are running and take a close look or when it comes to the presidential election Project Vote Smart has a full list of candidates that receive little or no attention from the Mass Media. I still haven’t had a chance to look at them all but when I took a closer look at Jill Stein it was clear that she is much better than either of the two candidates that the corporate media have presented to the public based on the fact that they collected the appropriate volume of bribes thinly disguised as campaign contributions to make them “viable.” At least a couple of the authors at the Black Agenda have come to the same conclusion and if enough people follow through with this belief then the corporate media will no longer have veto power over who we can consider for president.

Not Voting for Obama: We're Not Even Buying a Voting Ticket to the Show

by Ezili Dantò

The author supported Obama in 2008, for the sake of Haiti, the U.S. and the world. But no more. “Under the Obama tenure, indefinite military detention of U.S. citizens is lawful in the land of the free and the brave and Haitians are saddled with George Bush and Bill Clinton.” When a duopoly rules, voting is a sham. “Susan Rice takes over the role Colin Powell played for the Bushes while Cheryl Mills is out there pushing the Duvalierist agenda in Haiti previously championed by Bill Clinton's commerce secretary, the late Ron Brown.”

We supported a vote for Obama in 2008 for both pragmatic and idealistic reasons. But more so because eight-years of Bush and the application of the Wall Street de-regulation excesses left under from Bill Clinton and others had reached a crescendo point that was shockingly, brutally horrible and demoralizing for the entire world. But we also campaigned and urged a vote for Obama, despite his apparent selection by one-percenter forces, because the symbolic victory and metaphoric narrative of "The Whitehouse: From Sally Heming to Michel Obama" was a powerful and compelling vision we wished to participate in and bring to reality for the human race. (That sentiment was expressed in this essay: I Don't Know this America...But I'm Most Happy to Meet It.) Full article

Does the Black Political Class Actually Protect or Defend Black People? If Not, What Do They Do?

By Bruce Dixon

Do the black political class, our preachers, leading business people, and thousands of appointed and elected officials actually do us much good? Do they protect or defend us? Do they carry our wishes and will to the seats of power. Or do they just “represent” us by merely being there doing the bidding of corporate funders?

Let's take a trip to an imaginary black America, a place in which black leaders regularly stood on their hind legs to safeguard and protect the interest of their constituents against greedy banksters and institutional racism in the job, credit and housing markets. It's a pretend world where African American politicians are busily engaged in building and expanding opportunity for all, and leading the fight for peace, jobs, justice, and quality education and participatory democracy. It's a mythical place where prominent blacks in the business world too, work to create good jobs and stable communities and provide key support to the civic organizations engaged in this work as well. Ezili Dantò may be skeptical about the chances we have to beat an entrenched system but with the enormous amount of protest that have been going on there may be a lot of people that are waking up and if the join forces behind one candidate then they may have a chance. In the long run we should develop Instant Run-Off Elections but if there is any chance that we can get a sincere president like Jill Stein in office it is worth a try and it would be better than throwing away votes for candidates that have already indicated that they intend to sell everyone out.

If enough people are not dumb enough to fall for it anymore then it won’t work anymore!!

We have more stories for you but first a word from our sponsor; who happens to be more than ninety days past due on their payments but their reputable so I’m sure they’re good for it.

Call Fidelity Investments where we’ll be happy to answer all your questions

Tele-salesman: Hello Fidelity how may I help you?

Caller: Hi I saw your ad on TV; is it true that you’ll take the time to answer all my questions?

Tele-salesman: Absolutely we’re always happy to help!

Caller: Good, someone told me that you just say that to get my money but I didn’t believe a reputable company would lie to me; I can believe all the other things they said on TV to can’t I?
Tele-salesman: Of course, we’re a reputable company and we would never put out false ads.

Caller: Good then that means you must be able to make a green line appear on the floor to show me the way!

Tele-salesman: Well uh

Caller: Because I’m sure you would never put that out as an expensive piece of hype to lure us in and make as like you without actually providing information that helps the consumer.

Tele-salesman: No, of courser not but that..

Caller: Good but then I have another question; how much did you spend on that advertisement? I heard that that is quite expensive.

Tele-salesman: I’m sorry but that isn’t my department; although I’d be happy to answer your questions about investments.

Caller: Oh, um, all right; I guess you’re also a business and in addition to making money for me you also have to make money for yourself; so I’m wondering how you can do that if you have to pay all that money for advertising as well as commissions and overhead. Doesn’t that create a potential conflict of interest?

Tele-salesman: No we know our way around the business world and we can help you to guide you through it.

Caller: Oh good, the only reason I asked this is because I have heard abot all these scandals in the business world and how they’ve been doing one thing after another and I just wanted to make sure. Part of the reason that I ask is that the reason they got away with it is because they kept all their activities secret and avoided scrutiny; you wouldn’t do that would you?

Tele-salesman: No, no of course not.

Caller: Good then you’ll be able to get back to me with the cost of your commercials and make a green line appear on the floor then?

Tele-salesman: Look lady why don’t you just shut the hell up I’ve had it with all your damn questions. Why do I get all the damn pin heads. Do you want to invest of not damn it?

Oh never mind

Charters Have Nothing to do With Community Control of Schools

by Glen Ford

Charter school advocates are among the biggest scam artists in politics. They use the language of community control to transfer public assets into private hands. “Promoters of 'trigger laws' have only one use for parents: to pull the trigger on a school so that it can be converted to, or make room for, a charter school operated by the private sector.” Have mayors Michael Bloomberg and Rahm Emanuel, both bullies for charter schools, ever supported community control?

The so-called “parent trigger” law is the newest weapon in the arsenal of the school privatizers and their billionaire backers. The law was passed in California in 2010, and versions of it have been enacted in several other states. The California law allows a majority of parents to pull the “trigger” on their local school and take it out of control of the school district. It’s only been used against two elementary schools: first in Compton, then in the town of Adelanto. In both cases, the process dissolved in acrimony and bitterness, with many parents claiming they had been bulldozed into signing petitions. Full article

The core principles for Charter Schools should raise some doubts; these are private organizations that are interested in making a profit which isn’t involved in public schools and they do little if anything to raise additional money for schools unless it comes at an enormous cost that often falls on those least able to pay. There has been no sincere explanation as to how they can improve the quality of education by adding the profit expense which provides an incentive for those running the schools to cut expenses which could reduce the quality of education; furthermore they have already demonstrated that they’ve been using this as a method to promote corporate ideology. Another couple of articles article by Jitu Brown, Eric (Rico) Gutstein, and Pauline Lipman and Andy Kroll “Arne Duncan and the Chicago Success Story: Myth or Reality?” and “The Corporatization of Public Education” reinforce the one by Glen Ford and I have done by own review of Roy Fox’s book “Harvesting Minds” about Channel One which explains how much damage advertising has been doing to schools and the fact that they’re enabling corporations to influence the “educational” material given to kids that often avoids criticism of corporations.

Private Prison Corporations Are Slave Traders

by Glen Ford

Crime has been going down for nearly a generation, and the states have finally put the brakes on prison growth in response to the fiscal crunch. But Wall Street prison profiteers see the crisis as an opportunity. The Corrections Corporation of America has offered to buy nearly all the nation’s state prisons. “To ensure their profitability, the corporation insists that it be guaranteed that the prisons be kept at least 90 percent full.”

The nation’s largest private prison company, the Corrections Corporation of America, is on a buying spree. With a war chest of $250 million, the corporation, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, this month sent letters to 48 states, offering to buy their prisons outright. To ensure their profitability, the corporation insists that it be guaranteed that the prisons be kept at least 90 percent full. Plus, the corporate jailers demand a 20-year management contract, on top of the profits they expect to extract by spending less money per prisoner. Full article

The privatization of prisons should raise some major questions about the incentive to actually do a good job rehabilitating prisoners. Private industries are motivated by maximizing profit and they generally want their businesses to grow; which means that they have a disincentive to actually do a good job rehabilitating inmates! We already have a big enough problem with those running public prisons ignoring the best academic research to indicate what the most effective ways to rehabilitate people are; this is primarily due to the get tough policies of the politicians that appoint the people that run the prisons and it is virtually guaranteed that the privatization of them will only make it worse.

If Private Prisons are allowed to continue to expand they’re guaranteed to backfire; they’re among the most blatant examples of crime profiteering there is. In order for them to maximize their profits they need to ensure that the problems with crime aren’t solved!

On another not about the Black Agenda, which shouldn’t need to be addressed at all, as far as I can see they’re not promoting “radical” ideas that would threaten us nor do they appear to be promoting violence or revolution. However the reason I mention this is that it is virtually guaranteed that the right wing will attempt to stereo type them if they think they can get away with it; this ahs been the way they’ve operated on many other occasion. If more people take a close look at them I suspect they’ll find this isn’t the case at all; quite the contrary they seem to have much more rational views than those in power from what I’ve seen from them so far and they deserve a closer look.

And a final note on a campaign event with grass roots support that isn’t considered worthy by the corporations but if the rest of us want an alternative we might not want to let them screen our choices

Chicago: Join Dr. Stein's Green Surge!

OWS: Surprise Mass Media ignores convention protests

Occupy Wall Street hasn’t gone away and has been protesting the conventions although you might not know it judging by the coverage that the corporate media has been providing for it. In all fairness the protest haven’t been as big as they expected them to be; however it appears that part of the reason for that may be because a portion of the Occupy Wall Street movement has been trying to collect donations to help the victims of Hurricane Isaac.

(This was originally posted on Open Salon September, 7, 2011)

There was some discussion in the media about the Republican plans for the convention with the hurricane coming in and if they would alter their plans. For the most part they didn’t; although it was delayed by a day. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats had much to say about the hurricane although a reporter was fired for pointing out this in a joking manner when David Chalian said Romney and the Republicans “are happy to have a party with black people drowning.” This was followed up by an enormous amount of outrage over the insensitivity of the reporter. What they declined to do is consider the possibility that he may have had a legitimate point. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have been doing much if anything to repair the emergency response following disasters like this since Katrina. They both had their tours after the hurricane to show they cared but they haven’t reported much if at all how the recovery has been going.

In another incident the police have arrested a protester and accused him of making “terroristic threats” after he led a sign in a bank saying "You're being robbed;" and another saying "Give a man a gun, he'll rob a bank. Give a man a bank, he'll rob a country." He left the bank when asked and was pursued anyway even though there was no threat; while the people involved in white collar crimes that involve the theft of billions continue to go unpunished and remain in control of the banks.

Watch the March on the RNC
As of noon eastern, the March on the RNC has begun. The corporate media won't report on it, so follow and find livestreams on Twitter: #resistRNC #marchontheRNC #OccupyTheRNC #frnc, @OccupyRNC and @OccupyTampa. The protest will continue throughout the week. Nonviolent direct action marches will take place every day at 10 am as an alternative to the official, barbed-wire enclosed “event zone” (cage) declared by the city and police to keep protesters far away from the eyes of the media, while the wealthy are given lavish parties and the ears of the politicians inside the heavily-guarded walls.

Tomorrow at 5 pm, there will be a Rally and March Against Voter Suppression at Centennial Park (1800 E. 8th Ave, Tampa), and several other actions will be held at various times during the rest of the week, including a pro-labor rally, a rally in support of reproductive rights, and various autonomous/unpermitted marches against capitalism and police brutality. Jill Stein: Let's Crash the Conventions!

The Republican Party convention had absolutely nothing to offer but lies and appeals to patriotism. The policies that they’ve been promoting have become so insane that it makes the Democratic Party seem rational by comparison; this is the only way they can appear to be a decent part anymore; and it only works as long as they don’t cover any other people and ignore other issues which is what they’re doing.
The fact that the establishment feels the need to spend so much money on security while they’re cutting so many other programs that actually help the majority of the public should be raising enormous doubts about how sincere they are about their claims to represent the will of the public. This is especially true when you consider the fact that they have little or nothing to consider the demands of the Occupy Wall Street movement or any other grass roots movement while continuing to take an enormous amount of money from corporations that continue to call the shots.

Jill Stein has shown up at the protests at Romneyville and it should be clear that all this security wouldn’t be necessary if they were doing their job to begin with and representing the public. The security is so important because they don’t do their job and they have to control the situation so that no one interrupts the carefully script that has been written for the conventions and lets people know more about the policies and alternatives that could and should be available.

Jill Stein is one of the few presidential candidate that is advocating for Single Payer health Care, an end to wars based on lies, protection of the environment, an end to the corporate influence on schools and many other positions that the majority of the public support but the campaign contributors oppose. This may be why the corporate media refuses to give her a reasonable amount of air time and they’re trying to make it seem as if she has little or no support. The truth is that the support that both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama has is based primarily on the propaganda being put out by the corporate media while the support that Jill Stein has was developed at the grass roots level.

If there is another candidate that has sincere support it isn’t Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, both of whom obtained their support thanks to the help of political establishments controlled by corporations; it is one of the other presidential candidates that actually filled out their Project Vote Smart questionnaires unlike Barack Obama and Mitt Romney

Common Ground Collective, Food Not Bombs And Occupy Movement Form Coalition To Help Isaac & Katrina Victims

The Common Ground Collective, Food Not Bombs, and Occupy have come together to aid the Common Ground Health Clinic and set up mobile kitchens to feed those left in need by both Hurricane Isaac and Hurricane Katrina. PLEASE DONATE!

A ground breaking coalition of activists from the Common Ground Collective, Food Not Bombs, and Occupy have come together in a Relief Effort to aid not only the victims of Hurricane Isaac, but also the nearly 10,000 people who remain displaced from Hurricane Katrina. Occupy activists are using a communications platform called InterOccupy, that combines conference calls, discussion boards, email listserves, rss feeds and social media links to organize the efforts of the coalition.

Occupy activists are urging Occupy camps nationwide to organize donation drives to collect staple food goods and medical supplies. A partnership with Continental Expedited Services, a trucking company, will allow food collected in food drives nationwide to be distributed to those in need in New Orleans through Occupy Distribution Hubs being set up in several cities throughout the South East. Occupy Distribution Hubs are operating in Jackson, MS; Tuscaloosa, AL; and Birmingham, AL. Tonight, drivers will transport the first load of aid from Jackson, MS to Occupy NOLA. Aid collected by camps nationwide will be routed to the Common Ground Clinic and Occupy NOLA. Full Article

The Occupy Wall Street movement isn’t nearly as well set up as many powerful institutions but they’re trying to do what they can anyway with what little they have anyway. The government and the donors that contribute to the major political parties have much more resources but instead of doing much if anything to contribute to hurricane relief they have toured the area with an enormous amount of media coverage to show ”they care,” without actually doing anything more.

Group: Occupy Protester Accused Of Bank Robbery For Holding ‘You’re Being Robbed’ Sign

EASTON, Pa. (CBS) – An Occupy Easton protester faces an attempted bank robbery charge following an arrest at an organized event at a bank – during which the “Occupier” was holding a sign that reportedly read “You’re being robbed.”

According to The Express-Times, Dave Gorczynski allegedly held cardboard signs outside a Wells Fargo Branch that read, “You’re being robbed,” while the other said, “Give a man a gun, he can rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he can rob a country.”

Occupy Easton reports on their Facebook page that Gorczynski “was at the bank protesting the theft of our tax dollars, our homes, and our economy by the criminal banksters.”

Gorczynski allegedly did the same thing a short time later inside a Bank of America, prompting an employee to activate the panic alarm – reports The Express Times.

Police reportedly responded and located Gorczynski with the signs in question and arrested him.
“He is not the criminal. If the police were truly there to protect and serve the taxpayers, the banksters would be arrested and this man would be called a hero,” posted the Occupy Easton group. Full Article

Robbery Charges Dropped Against "Nature Dave"

District Attorney withdraws attempted robbery charges against man accused of bringing "You're being robbed" signs into banks. Other charges still stand.

Northampton County's chief proseuctor has withdrawn robbery charges against a man accused of bringing a "You're being robbed" sign into two Easton banks earlier this week.

But John Morganelli said Wednesday another set of charges -- terroristic threats and disorderly conduct -- still stand against David Gorczynski, otherwise known as "Nature Dave." Full Article

They’re attempting to portray David Gorczynski as a terrorist dispite the fact that it is obvious that he wasn’t trying to rob the bank and that they were familiar with him and knew it or should have known it. He clearly left the bank and had no weapon and there is no evidence that they’ve released to indicate that there was ever a real threat. If the picture above is the strongest evidence they have of some kind of crime it is clearly inappropriate; especially when they continue to do little or nothing about the Lehman brothers, Jon Corzine, Jamie Dimon and many other financial executives that have clearly either been involved in the embezzlement of an enormous amount of funds or negligence that resulted in the loss of billions of dollars.

The biggest difference by far seems to be that those that have been involved in the real crimes have also donated to political campaigns and had connections while those that try to stop the real crimes have little or no political power.

Oakland Obama Office Occupied in Support of Pfc. Manning. Video.

from Scott Olsen:

I was there. When it came down to it we decided that I would not be arrested. One of the reasons for that was so I could upload and distribute this video I took within minutes of us entering. This is before the march and media made it up here. In the video you will see Obama's staffers push us when we tried to move chairs so we could sit in the middle of the office. I got pushed which made me drop my phone and then a man brandished a chair against me.

8/17, 11:30am: Livestream replaced with video clip recorded last night. Six of the seven people, including veterans, were arrested during the nonviolent sit-in. The office was shut down for the night.
11pm Eastern: Scott Olsen and members of Iraq Veterans Against War are currently sitting in an Obama Campaign Headquarters in Oakland demanding Pfc. Manning's release. Dozens of supprters are also rallying outside; some police are on the scene. Full Article

The protests continue during the convention:

Bradley Manning Demonstrations Planned for September 6

On Thursday, September 6, supporters of Bradley Manning are planning to hold several nonviolent demonstrations around the country. The protests are timed to occur at the same time President Obama delivers his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This isn’t the first time those advocating for the release of the Army private have clashed with President Obama. In August, Manning activists “occupied” the Obama campaign headquarters in Oakland and Los Angeles in California, as well as the office in Portland, Oregon.

Protesters reportedly targeted the Obama campaign offices in response to a comment made by the President in 2011 wherein he said that Manning “broke the law.” This statement has been interpreted by Manning activists as a declaration of Manning’s guilt before a trial on the merits of the charges has been held. Bradley Manning support network

The holding of Bradley Manning while postponing the trial on numerous occasions with the latest date in February or March of 2013 is clearly unconstitutional. Manning doesn’t seem to have endangered anyone but clearly when George W Bush started a war based on lies about weapons of mass destruction he caused thousands of deaths and he hasn’t been charged with anything. Recently Desmond Tutu said Bush, Blair Should Face Trial Over Iraq. There is an enormous amount of evidence to justify this, possibly including new undisclosed evidence of further torture, )Human Rights Watch says it has evidence of wider U.S. waterboarding by CIA, allies) yet both Bush and Blair remain free.

In a sincere democracy the public needs to have access to the information that should be required to make decisions about holding their officials accountable and voting out those that aren’t accountable. If Manning released information about these wars based on false pretenses then he would have been helping the public with this not harming them.

Global Education Strike: Oct. 18 & Nov. 14-21

We are calling for a Global Education Strike. It is the first time that an education strike is being coordinated worldwide. We will UNITE in solidarity, because no matter where we live, we face the same struggle against national state and profit driven interests, and their hold on education. Increasing tuition fees, budget cuts, outsourcing, school closures, as well as other phenomena are linked to an increasing commercialization and privatization of education. Only by uniting globally will we be able to overcome these and enable free emancipatory education for all.

We are all struggling against cuts in education. Most of us are drowning in student debt. The increasing pressure to perform just makes us sick and the restrictions on education and ever-increasing tuition fees, among other barriers, make us angry! Everyone must have access to education no matter their monetary or social status. We have had enough of the pressure to measure everything - even the unmeasurable! We are sick and tired of competitiveness being the only criteria dictating everything! It is about time that we do something about this together – UNITED!

We are all people affected by the increasing commodification and commercialization of education. This is vividly portrayed by the symptoms affecting us, such as schools and universities being de-democratized and the further implementation of more hierarchical structures. The education market and competition between institutions is being facilitated by governments around the world, which are increasingly privatizing education, health care, and all other social needs. Reforming the education system is one of the most important issues that we face. The discussion about it in the current political establishment is being controlled almost entirely by those that want to turn it into a privatized system that puts profits or in many cases corporate ideology ahead of the most effective way to educate children. The educations system clearly should doing the best they can to educate children in the most effective way possible and this doesn’t involve corporate control.

One of the biggest problems driving up the cost of education is the fact that it is being funded by property taxes and the excessive use of copyright laws to create what they call “intellectual property” out of knowledge. This means that an enormous amount of the information that is in the books that are used to educate children are consider the property of those that own the copyrights and that they should be able to decide who can access it and who can’t.

They have even been creating an enormous amount of propaganda to convince many of us that some of the people running for office are advocates for the middle class like Elizabeth Warren Elizabeth Warren who is supporting charter schools not unions and contrary to the way the corporate media portrays her a close look clearly indicates that she’s Not a consumer advocate as we’ve been led to believe! Instead they present her and others as our advocate based on an enormous amount of propaganda then once they get her in office they use the trust people give her to increase corporate control over schools by increasing charter schools.

#YoSoy132 Blockades Mexico's Largest Media Company; Support Them At #OccupySaks!

On July 26, 2012, members of the #YoSoy132 movement and other Mexican social movements held a siege of Televisa, Mexico's largest TV broadcaster and media conglomerate. Afterward, the following statement from the Student Assembly was read (translated by OccupyWallSt.org):
Closing remarks from the siege of Televisa

The symbolic and peaceful siege of Televisa is an historic and unprecedented accomplishment, the first action directly resuming our program of struggle, particularly our number one point: the democratization and transformation of the media and dissemination of information, as our letter states: "We fight against media monopolies and oligopolies that concentrate and manipulate information, particularly in the current electoral context where collusion between political parties and media companies is evident." We note that the current model of commercial media, represented by Televisa and TV Azteca, are excluded from society and civil organizations in general. We believe that only the socialization and collective management of the media will allow for a true open media and guarantee the right to information and freedom of expression.

Summoned by shame, indignation, and suffering, we are here today at the gates of the media company which has been tasked to misinform and manipulate the Mexican people.

#YoSoy132 is a nonpartisan, nonviolent, autonomous, anti-neoliberal social, political, and student movement independent of the parties, candidates, and organizations who respond to an electoral program -- a democratic movement where decisions emanate from the local and general assemblies which has transcended the electoral situation and continues to be organized and to fight to profoundly transform Mexico, to act as a counterweight to any decision and policy that violates the rights and interests of our people. As indicated in my previous post about why alternative media is an absolute necessity, this issue is as important if not more important than education since it enables the public to get the information they need to continue getting the information they need to participate in the democratic process. The fact that the corporate press hasn’t been reporting on the protest movement nearly as well as they could and should have is evidence of the fact that they can’t be trusted to provide us with the most important news which is why I have been compiling a long list of alternative media outlets for people to use. These outlets are on a Wiki, so if you think I should add one you can do so or let me know.

Closer Than You Think: Top 15 Things Romney and Obama Agree On

Republicans and Democrats, like Romney and Obama are of one mind on many more things than they disagree about. From war and empire to their policies on Big Ag, Big Energy, “clean coal and safe nuclear power,” and the war on drugs their areas of agreement are vast and troubling, and perhaps far more important than the rhetorical and stylistic differences highlighted by US political campaigns.

Too much agreement between Republicans and Democrats has always been bad news for those at the bottom of America's class and racial totem poles.

Back in 1875, Frederick Douglass observed that it took a war among the whites to free his people from slavery. What then, he wondered, would an era of peace among the whites bring us? He already knew the answer. Louisiana had its Colfax Massacre two years earlier. A wave of thousands upon thousands of terroristic bombings, shootings, mutilations, murders and threats had driven African Americans from courthouses, city halls, legislatures, from their own farms, businesses and private properties and from the voting rolls across the South. They didn't get the vote back for 80 years, and they never did get the land back. But none of that mattered because on the broad and important questions of those days there was at last peace between white Republicans and white Democrats --- squabbles around the edges about who'd get elected, but wide agreement on the rules of the game.

Like Douglass, the shallow talking heads who cover the 2012 presidential campaign on corporate media have noticed out loud the remarkable absence of disagreement between Republican and Democratic candidates on many matters. They usually mention what the establishment likes to call “foreign policy.” But the list of things Republicans and Democrat presidential candidates agree on, from coddling Wall Street speculators, protecting mortgage fraudsters and corporate wrongdoers to preventing Medicare For All to so-called “foreign policy,” “free trade,” “the deficit” “clean coal and safe nuclear power” and “entitlement reform,” is clearly longer and more important than the few points of mostly race and style, upon which they disagree. Full Article at the Black Agenda Report

Both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama collect the vast majority of their campaign funds from the same corporations and they use this to buy up an enormous amount of propaganda that they expect the majority of the public to base their votes on; so it shouldn’t be surprising that they agree on many of the most important issue to these contributors. They don’t donate all that money without expecting a big return and they’ve been doing much less to answer to the will of the public lately so they need a better scam than they have had in the past.

For the most part they haven’t got a better scam at all!

Unless they convince the public that the only people they have to choose from are those that are presented to them by the corporate media. The conventions that are just coming to a close are a masterpiece of propaganda for people that rely almost entirely on the traditional corporate media for their information or those that don’t pay more than a token amount of attention to politics. For the most part they’re much more effective for the Democratic party this year thanks to the extremist positions of the Republican Party that have stirred up many people. If these people accept the lie that they can only chose from the two candidates presented to them by the corporations then Obama should easily win this election; however if the Occupy Wall Street protests and alternative media outlets have done a good enough job informing the public about alternative parties then they could be in for a big surprise. Unfortunately there are many alternative media outlets that have bought in to this lie and are reinforcing it and others that are actually fronts for traditional corporate media but not all of them and if enough people recognize the difference then it could mean major reform.

If not then the corporations will continue to believe they can maintain control and corruption will continue to escalate at the expense of all of us.

U.S. is the Worst Police State in the World – By the Numbers
There’s no getting around the fact that the United States is the Mother of All Police States. China can’t compete in the incarceration business. With four times the U.S. population, it imprisons only 70 percent as many people – about the same number as the non-white prison population of the U.S. Even worse, 80,000 U.S. inmates undergo the torture of solitary confinement on any given day.

When U.S. corporate media operatives use the term “police state,” they invariably mean some other country. Even the so-called “liberal” media, from Democracy Now to the MSNBC menagerie, cannot bring themselves to say “police state” and the “United States” without putting the qualifying words “like” or “becoming” in the middle. The U.S. is behaving “like” a police state, they say, or the U.S. is in danger of “becoming” a police state. But it is never a police state. Since these privileged speakers and writers are not themselves in prison – because what they write and say represents no actual danger to the state – they conclude that a U.S. police state does not, at this time, exist.
Considering the sheer size and social penetration of its police and imprisonment apparatus, the United States is not only a police state, but the biggest police state in the world, by far: the police state against whose dimensions all other police systems on Earth must be measured. Full Article at the Black Agenda Report

The consideration of whether this is a police state should take into consideration more than the numbers, of course, they should also take into consideration what the conditions are in prison as the Black Agenda points out in the rest of their article and other things, including the ones mentioned in this blog, like the enormous police presence they feel is necessary for the scripted conventions that don’t allow dissenting voices; the arrest and detention of many people that disclose information about corrupt government activity like Bradley Manning allegedly did; the fact that they arrest people like Dave Gorczynski for protesting corruption while the corrupt go free; the fact that the grass roots candidates for office that don’t have the approval of the corporations can’t get any air time and many other details. This police state could come to a screeching halt if enough people wake up and let the politicians know that we’re not dumb enough to fall for it anymore!!

Great update on the upcoming elections and the real issues the campaign should be based on - but isn't. The whole convention coverage for both parties is incredibly surreal. It bears no connection to the everyday lives Americans lead. It's noteworthy that Jill Stein is the only candidate who lays out a substantive campaign platform with promises about what she would change. Obama seems to have learned his lesson in 2008. If you don't lay out any policies, you can't be accused of breaking your promises. Great post.

Dr Stuart Jeanne Bramhall September 08, 2012 03:36 AM

[r] Zachd! fabulous round up. Thank you. Dave G's plight is disgusting. Can you imagine? Well, yes, all too well. What evil weasels. So we are colluding with Al Qaeda in Syria but we are locking up people of conscience in America. WTG, Barack! Reminds me of Jill Stein's using the expression "bullshit" and her ad being threatened to be pulled. Actual pandering bullshit is welcome on the air waves but someone calling it out for what it is, brings censure. And Don Siegelman going to prison for a decade cuz he got framed by Rove and his cronies and their selective and extreme prosecution. Orwellian. Sadistic. Evil.

Did your read that there were 15,000 media people in Charlotte and 5000 delegates and reps. What does that say? All the money flowing and all the schmoozing and cronying up the elite political class and the ruling class and the celeb media class. Where's my vomit bucket.

I couldn't stomach seeing Obama so I was watching another network, maybe the Mentalist? and suddenly on tnt or one of those stations there is a commercial saying to immediately to go to CNN to watch the president's speech. Yes, let's get the ratings of the plastic pep rally that defies the nightmare betrayals of BOTH major parties.

Take care. Great work.

Best, libby

Dr Bramhall, they’ve been pushing for so much that it may give the impression that they think they can get away with anything; and many people have become complacent or distracted by the enormous amount of distractions provided by the propaganda machine so they’ve been having more success then I would have previously expected. This may be why it is so surreal; however on the plus side they’re so obvious now that it should be clear to all but the most complacent that they’re running a scam and people are waking up.

This is just as well since they’re on an unsustainable course and it isn’t even in their own best interest to maintain it.

Libby, I have mixed feelings about that ad which I saw for the first time on Cenk Uygur last night; I’m glad she’s getting some air time but a thirty second commercial isn’t the way to get messages across and they shouldn’t be used at all. Instead we should have an interview process and sincere candidates shouldn’t have to stoop to fund raising and rushing catch phrases without discussion of issues. My main objection to it isn’t Jill Stein but the absurd system we have; her commercials aren’t nearly as bad as the crap being put out by the corporate candidates saturating the airwaves with lies. I’ll get to that more after the election since it is too late to make a point for this one.

Didn’t hear those numbers but they aren’t surprising and they’re the tip of the iceberg. I think I watched one of those pathetic Wrong Turn show the convention was so bad and surfed around. They’re mainly for entertainment and propaganda not democratic purposes as they should be.

Are Cain, Cantor and Romney campaigning for Obama?

As many of you must know by now many from the right wing are criticizing the Occupy Wall street movement and some of the most vocal ones are Mitt Romney, Eric Cantor and Herman Cain.

(This was originally posted on Open Salon October 12, 2011)

A Sample of the criticism is available in the following articles:

Mitt Romney: Occupy Wall Street Is ‘Dangerous…Class Warfare’
Mitt Romney zings "Occupy Wall Street" and praises Herman Cain in N.H.
Eric Cantor Condemns Occupy Wall Street 'Mobs': They're 'Pitting Americans Against Americans'
Herman Cain steps up attacks on Occupy Wall Street protests

I’m sure you’ve heard the arguments so I won’t go into too much detail; but the most dominant argument seems to be that the Occupy Wall Street Crowd is using class warfare and they trying to create divisions among American’s. If you don’t see how distorted that is I’m not going to go to much trouble to convince you; but it is clear that the ones fighting class warfare are the oligarchies that are rigging the system and they’re also the ones attempting to use divide and rule tactics. This claim that Occupy Wall Street is just a lame attempt to attribute the tactics being used by the oligarchies on their opponents; and I have no doubt that any rational person could see this. This means that it would essentially backfire for certain; and if you combine that with the fact that the Mass Media continues to try to present only two options to the public, generally speaking, the incredibly corrupt Democrats including Obama that have sold out to Wall street and the even more corrupt and fanatical Republicans. Any candidate that is sincere about representing the public and rational is boycotted by the Mass Media and since they can’t get any name recognition then the public is presented with the choice of choosing Wall Street candidate A or B.

By presenting such an absurd argument they are presenting the public with defenders of Wall Street even though any rational person can see that Wall Street is incredibly corrupt and then Barack Obama comes along and sympathizes with the protestors, or at least he pretends to. This could enable him to present himself as the defenders of the majority against these much more radical Republicans. Since both parties are receiving their campaign financing from Wall Street and they both spend much more time meeting with representatives of Wall Street and they both do more to pass legislation to benefit wall Street than the public then I don’t think it is unreasonable to consider the possibility that Wall Street has control over the government and they’re only giving the public lip service to keep them from revolting. The only difference between the parties is the type of lip service they give the public.

For the most part I see little or no reason for Wall Street to be concerned if representatives from one of these two parties gain power since they both work for Wall Street; however they have to do a good job presenting the appearance of democracy to the public. Or at least they used to. For one reason or another they seem to have gotten much greedier than they used to be and they no longer seem to feel the need to do much to pretend presumably because they think the public will continue to accept the false choice between corporate candidates A or B. the reason for this may be because it has worked for so long so they keep trying to get away with a little bit more until it gets to extreme levels which it has. Under these circumstances if they can arrange for one of the parties to become demons and rely on the support of their extreme right wing social conservatives that vote largely on one issue like guns or abortion and the other to do a little better job pretending to represent the people then they can elect Obama and they can continue corrupt business as usual.

I’m tempted to say that maybe Ann Coulter is also using reverse discrimination to help elect Obama except for one problem; she mentioned the fact that Obama is also representing Wall Street in a simple manner that seems accurate and to the point. In a recent interview on Fox News (see; “Coulter: Occupy Wall Street doesn’t reflect well on Obama, Pelosi” at daily caller.com) she made one of her usual statements about how the Occupy Wall Street protestors are demonic and they’re close to violence. This is the same Ann Coulter that said that “I thought Juan Williams should have punched Chris Wallace in the face for saying that when he came on in the same half of the program,” when talking about comparing gays to blacks (see: “Ann Coulter On Fox News: Chris Wallace Deserved To Be ‘Punched’ For Rick Santorum DADT Debate Question” on mediate.com). I guess she thinks it’s OK when she incites violence but not when the opposition protest peacefully, although she would prefer to present them as violent. The problem is that she also correctly to a point, as far as I know says, “I mean, on one hand to the extent they say they stand for anything at all, they’re against Wall Street, well Wall Street — but they support Obama. Well, Wall Street gave its biggest campaign donations in world history to Obama. It was Obama who bailed out the banks, you know, for Pete’s sake.” As far as I know Obama did collect more money from Wall Street than any candidate in history. This is part of a trend that has been going on for decades; the sitting president always breaks previous records when it comes to collecting bribes, thinly disguised as campaign contributions, mostly from Wall Street. He definitely collected more money but I’m not sure exactly where he got it though.

If he didn’t get it from Wall Street then where else could he have gotten it; the unions which are supposedly the biggest supporter to campaigns except for big business organization? After they saw how he kept his promise to “put on some comfortable shoes and walk the picket lines himself,” I doubt if they were too enthusiastic about raising too much money for Obama especially since he agreed to negotiate one item after another that would benefit wall Street in exchange for, well nothing, really, since the republicans kept saying they wouldn’t negotiate on anything they would just keep taking the concessions that Obama made. This was also made clear by some of the protestors including some that showed up on the Ed Show at one point. Ed tried to imply that Obama was in their corner and they made it clear, politely that they didn’t think so; I don’t remember the exact words on this but this was the basic idea that they presented and there have been other examples where some participants have clearly indicated that they’re not impressed by Obama or the Democratic party either. Unfortunately this isn’t the way the Mass Media is presenting it to the vast majority of the public.

This could be just idle speculation about them using reverse discrimination; and this hypothesis certainly has some problems; however, even if there is no intent behind it, and I suspect there probably isn’t for this purpose at least, the results are the same and the choice being presented to the public involves either the fanatical greedy Republicans or Obama who collects more money from Wall Street and does a slightly better job pretending to represent the public. While I was in the process of writing this blog post a new twist was added that could make this much worse; there was an alleged attempt to assassinate the Saudi ambassador. There are now calls to retaliate and these may escalate dramatically before the campaign ends although I hope not. The circumstances surrounding this are suspicious; and the US has a history of going to war based on false pretences so skepticism is warranted although believing the most bizarre conspiracy theory isn’t. I’m sure there will be conspiracy theories surrounding it; however even if the official version is true then there is still reason for skepticism of any attempts to initiate a get tough policy against Iran.

I have gone into this on other posts and so have many others so for now I will just say that any action on the part of the United States should keep in mind that they have been meddling in the affairs of many other countries including Iran when they supported the coup to restore the Shah and kept him in power for decades while he tortured his own people; then when he was finally out of power they provided finances and weapons to both sides of the Iran Iraq war among many other things. Any claim to the high ground by the US will be based on lies and propaganda; and except for those that accept the propaganda of the US Mass Media every well informed person knows it. We could potentially be presented with one side that represents the get tough on Iran position and defends Wall Street despite the enormous amount of corruption that is based in fact verses another side that does a better job pretending to stand up to Wall Street without actually doing it and joining in the demonization of Iran when necessary; and the public will be encouraged to base their votes on highly emotional grounds that don’t involve scrutinizing the facts. If this isn’t the exact scenario we are faced with it could be something way to damn close.

Fortunately the protest are growing and many of the people involved in it are presumably much better informed than the Tea Party or the complacent majority. This has even gone world wide, as indicated by several articles including “Occupy Wall Street Movement Sparks World Wide Protests” at wfxd.com; protests are now being held in the UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries. They’re almost certainly being supported in many other poorer countries including the ones that are forced to live under oppressive governments that are supported with money obtained with the help of US corporations that rely on sweat shop labor. Many of these countries also recognize that anyone of them could be invaded at some point based on false pretences. This may seem alarmist to some but it wasn’t too long ago that we went to war based on claims of WMDs that were disproved even before the invasion and many other past military activities including Vietnam were based on lies. Furthermore claims that people like Mitt Romney or even Barack Obama are “very moral men,” as one preacher put it in reference to Romney should be highly suspect when they support powerful institutions that use sophisticated tactics to obtain profits for a small percentage of the public by conducting activities that lead to great damage to the majority including torture, lack of health care, starvation and even mass murder.

Since these things are done by complex institutions the people who run them maintain what they consider plausible deniability by controlling the propaganda machine; however these atrocities wouldn’t be happening without the support of these powerful people and the propaganda machine therefore it would be much more appropriate to think of these people as sociopaths. This may sound extreme to some but I have no doubt that if a close look at the details were allowed then it would hold up to scrutiny. One of the things that Stanley Milgram found while conducting his Obedience to Authority experiments is the fact that when people were farther from the actual damage (out of mind out of sight) they were much more likely to obey orders that cause the torture of the subject. Even though he wasn’t actually being electrocuted in this experiment they thought he was. These complex institutions enable many people to maintain plausible deniability, as long as they don’t look to close including those that run the institutions and many people with much less access to information that support them by simply being unwitting consumers or voters that make their choices based on lies.

This is all the more reason why we should have what I have described as an Educational Revolution or something similar to inform the public better about many activities so that thy will be beeter prepared to participate in democracy and implement Election reform which enables the public to control the election process, not the corporate media. This should involve requiring qualified candidates to answer questions similar to a job application that is established with the input of the public and attend interviews on various subject that are controlled by the public with the help of people educated on any given subject.

A follow up blog about the activities surrounding the response from Occupy Wall Street to Charlie Rangel and John Lewis which may involve either misinformation or potential mistakes of some sort will be coming soon. I thought Cain might have been equipped to at least run for the office but now I find out ‘he think they Jealous and wants to take his Cadillac’ I think I will pass on him to. The GOP is so out of line with its candidates that it could quite possibly be a Wall Street conspiracy to reelect the Golden Man, he sure has been golden to them. The current crop of GOP candidates fail in every known intellectual criteria. No one could round up a roster of imbeciles like this by accident.

Jack, this certainly seems like a reasonable hypothesis; however few people will believe it and a close look will almost certainly bring some problems. That doesn’t mean the official explanation makes sense though; what they’re doing on a routine basis is downright insane and absurd. There is definitely an unexplained mystery surrounding the social behavior of the most powerful people in this country. Sometimes I get the impression that some of these fanatics might actually believe their own BS; perhaps because the only ones they listen to are those within their own circle of ideologues. One of these fanatics that might believe their own crap might be Charles Krauthammer who just wrote another article, Democrats settle on ‘eat the rich’ as key to campaign so one sided it is hard to believe he can’t see the problems with it if he allows himself to listen to different points of views. He made a variation of the usual class warfare argument then he wrote:

“Except that the real tea party actually had a program — less government, less regulation, less taxation, less debt. What’s the Occupy Wall Street program? Eat the rich.”

Naturally neither he nor Barack Obama mentioned the fact that the rich have gotten rich by skewering the system to enable them to gouge both the consumers and the workers through a variety of corrupt tactics; which means they never earned their money at all; they stole it!

"we should have what I have described as an Educational Revolution or something similar to inform the public better about many activities so that thy will be beeter prepared to participate in democracy and implement Election reform "....Amen!

I take issue with the fact that there are far too many nuevo politicos who have no real understanding of the political landscape and there is far too much chatter.

Fay, the problem is also with the voters who are not as informed as they should be and the way they're fed a constant stream of propaganda that encourages them to stay that way. This is beginning at a very early age and it increased dramatically when they introduced Channel One into schools although many of us weren't paying attention. they're drilling ads into children younger and younger and it is interfering with their ability to think rationally and participate in the system. Fortunately there are people researching this but the results need to be relayed to the majority so that they can stand up to this propaganda.
