Walmart Crime Report November 2025

There were at least eleven more shootings at Walmart in November 2025, with five of them having one death each related to the shootings, and one of those also had an unrelated death in the parking lot which was initially assumed to be related, but turned out to be an unrelated medical death, in what seems like a massive coincidence; but, since deaths from shootings or other causes happen so often it may not be quite as big a coincidence as it seems. One of the fatal shootings was a cop shooting a suspect, another was a suspect shooting himself after shooting and injuring two victims, a third was a suspect in a robbery shot by an accomplice, there was two additional injuries from two of the other shootings, one another suspect shot by a cop. There was also a report of another shooting from last June, which wasn't previously reported on Search Engines, adding to evidence that they're less reliable than they used to be, even for major events like shootings or murders, which means the chances of these reports being underestimates are increasing, and in some cases, guaranteed.

In addition to the five deaths from shootings and one other death from natural causes already mentioned there was another dead body found on their property, presumably from a drug overdose, and there were two people killed in accidents, one that actually happened late last month, but the victim died in the Hospital two and a half weeks after the accident, which brings the total deaths to nine. Even without this accidental death last month had seven accidental deaths from auto crashes, which may have been a record, if this death was added retroactively it would have been eight.

And, in addition to the eleven shootings there were also at least seven or eight more gun related crimes without shootings, including several armed robberies, sometimes when they get caught shoplifting, a domestic argument, and someone threatening to "kill all males" who was ranting about religion and human trafficking, causing a panic and evacuation, although a gun was not shown. But, like I said there's good reason to believe that this is an underestimate, since there's good evidence showing searches for crime on Google or other search engines are less reliable, partly because they're being flooded by ads disguised as news stories. It may seem as if crime has dropped, even during the holidays, but, if so, it's hard to know why, since there's very little research on it, and that researched isn't widely reported so few people know about it, and some of that research may be flawed or biased for economic reasons.

I've previously pointed out that the fact that there are a growing number of brazen ads packaged as News stories flooding Google or other search engines, leaving less room for real news, including crime, even major crimes. The following screenshot shows five consecutive articles with headlines that look like ads; Google provides ten articles on each page, and on one occasion a week or two before Thanksgiving there were at least two consecutive pages of these meaning there were at least 20 consecutive ads or press releases packaged as news stories, with no real news. When it's taken to this bizarre extreme it makes it impossible for Google or other search engines promoting these to be as effective a research tool as it used to be.

I asked Google AI several questions about this and received several answers with credibility problems that also include some legitimate admissions, which may be accompanied by bad spin that hardly justifies these tactics.

Does Google AI get promotional payments for elevating obvious ads disguised as news on their algorithm like Walmart Black Friday deals officially dropped today Save up to 80 on tech kitchen gear home essentials and more 11/14/2025

Google states that advertising payments do not influence a site's ranking in its organic search results, asserting a separation between its ad business and its search algorithm. While ads may appear separately in AI-driven search overviews, they are distinct from organic results. Instead, Google's AI-powered search ranks content based on factors like relevance, quality, and E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). The type of promotional content you describe, "obvious ads disguised as news," is more likely to be a scam created using AI, especially during the holiday season.

Key points on Google's search and advertising:

Organic vs. Paid Results: Google uses separate algorithms for its non-paid (organic) search results and its paid advertisements. Paying for ads does not improve a site's organic ranking.

AI and Ads: In AI-powered search overviews, Google displays ads separately from the generated summaries. These are different from the organic results and are displayed based on user intent and ad targeting.

Ranking Factors: Google's AI search algorithm uses criteria such as content quality, originality, and the E-E-A-T framework to determine ranking. Content that is relevant, comprehensive, and comes from a trustworthy source is more likely to be featured.

Scam Awareness: During holiday shopping, scammers use AI to create fake endorsements and deceptive ads to defraud online shoppers. It is important to only use trusted websites for shopping. Complete article

I've previously written about how most, if not all, Artificial Intelligence, including Google AI and Grok, is biased in favor of the establishment, since they consider establishment sources more reliable than non-establishment sources, but they still do a better job than traditional media or politicians in many cases, perhaps because they often include research that the establishment often down plays, or, at a minimum, simply because they usually reply at all, while the media and politicians simply refuse to ask or answer questions they want to avoid. However, the claim that advertising payments don't impact a sites ranking is hard to believe, although the alternative is that something else is, which serves the same purpose.

They claim that content quality and trustworthiness is a significant fact, yet the quality and credibility of these ads disguised as News Articles is virtually non-existent! I suppose some scam artists might be able to influence their rankings if they understand the algorithms, but there's no doubt that if Google wanted to do a better job ranking them they could; we know this because despite Google's flaws, they've done significantly better at this in the past, implying that for one reason or another they choose not to.

It's virtually guaranteed they have a profit motive, or some other motive for this even without a full explanation of what they do in secret, which is where their decisions are made. In the next question you'll see they admit to some serious flaws, while putting an incredibly bad spin on their explanation to make it seem as if there's no problem here.

Why do so many News outlets present press releases about sales or corporate promotions as "News" instead of obvious advertising? 12/02/2025

News outlets present corporate promotions as "news" primarily because it's a cost-effective way to fill content, a practice that has become more common with the rise of digital media and the decline of traditional ad revenue. These organizations receive press releases as free, credible sources of information and news ideas, and they can use this content as "sponsored content" or "native advertising," which blends in with regular articles to reach consumers who may otherwise avoid traditional ads.

Reasons news outlets use press releases as "news."

Cost-effectiveness: Press releases provide content for news organizations at a lower cost than original reporting. This allows outlets to fill airtime or web pages with material they don't have to create from scratch.

Native advertising: The rise of digital media has made it easy to format advertising to look like genuine news content, also known as "native advertising" or "sponsored content". This helps to capture the attention of consumers who use ad blockers or ignore traditional ads.

Source of story ideas: Journalists use press releases as a source for story ideas, and they may either publish the release as is or use it as a starting point for a more in-depth report. Many news outlets will publish the release verbatim.

Credibility: Press releases provide a source of on-the-record information that can be cited as credible, especially in times of crisis or transition. This makes it easier for reporters to get the facts straight.

Reputation: By publishing press releases, outlets can also signal that they are working with, or providing coverage for, the featured company. This can be seen as a form of advertising by extension. Complete article

United States of America FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20580: Enforcement Policy Statement on Deceptively Formatted Advertisements Section 5 of the FTC Act prohibits “unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce.” ..... The Commission has long held the view that advertising and promotional messages that are not identifiable as advertising to consumers are deceptive if they mislead consumers into believing they are independent, impartial, or not from the sponsoring advertiser itself.

Can someone explain how press release writing and distribution services work? 2024 A press release can be part of an overall PR strategy. A press release is generally a news announcement and not the same thing as a featured article. For example a company may announce a new executive, awards won, or an event. The benefit to a press release is that the same exact information is published in multiple outlets and is placed in news databases that journalists use to find story ideas. Journalists might publish as is or reach out for more information, an interview, or an expert quote. It is most often just published as is. The main benefit is getting a lot of coverage quickly. I generally recommend press releases for the above examples or for newer companies to help establish a web presence. Press release backlinks are no follow so they don’t help SEO. But they also don’t get dinged for duplicate content.

Why Do Big Companies Still Advertise On TV Instead Of Social Media? 03/01/2019 Television advertising confers legitimacy and prestige. Because of its higher cost and visibility, television immediately confers an element of prestige and legitimacy on the advertiser. It’s an unspoken endorsement for the company just to be there. By contrast, social media advertising can be done at a smaller/cheaper scale and with lower investments in production costs. This is the same reason that some companies have been known to blow their entire advertising budget on one Super Bowl ad.

Where is the line drawn between advertising and simple story telling and news reporting when brands are apparent or mentioned in movies, TV shows, news, and if it's mere advertising in exchange for money, is it agreed upon beforehand? 2020 Joe Belkin:

What generally happens is the company (or coalition) sends out a PR puff piece to local stations in the guise of “news.” They are also known as EPK or electronic press kits. They help a station fill 3–5 minutes of airtime and are extensively done. There are areas where they can “cut away’ to a local anchor or reporter who seems to ask the question which is answered by footage or an ;expert’ on camera.

They usually snipe in tiny print at the end of telecast - some footage supplied by ….

Now, whether you are appalled by this or not is your call.

In most small towns, a mall opening gets major air time or Smithers Lumber sponsoring the annual tree lighting ceremony tat draws 50% of the population - news or not news?

Or a package of new Disney World rides opening in FL?

Or that if they are a network affiliate that carries that sports coverage, it will get extra coverage like a CBS aff in Montana will cover the Masters in greater detail than the ABC station there?

It’s UP TO YOU, the viewer to shift through news and also ask WHY?

It might be benign like an EPK on going to the AZ during Spring training to see the local baseball team … or a new movie premiere that basically is a free ad for the studio but it appears the local news anchor is asking Tim Hanks a question … or it might be running an EPK from a RTV (Russian) versus one from Reuters on the MIddle East …

YOU DECIDE if it’s news or not.

The Press Release Isn’t Dead — And Here’s Why It Still Matters 06/27/2025 1. They Provide Credible, On-the-Record Information.

In a media landscape where misinformation and opinion-based content are common, press releases offer clear, factual, on-the-record statements from an organization. They help journalists verify details, gather quotes, and trace official timelines. In times of crisis or transition, this credibility is critical.

Reporters often need a reliable source of information they can reference and cite. According to FitSmallBusiness, 68% of journalists find press releases the most useful source for content or ideas. This underscores their value as a trusted form of media communication—even in an age of digital-first storytelling.

They come right out and admit that one of the main reasons for accepting press releases as News is it's cost-effectiveness, which should raise major doubts about how we fund News and investigative journalism, yet they ignore that and act as if it's not a problem, and even portray for profit companies as reliable or "credible" sources despite their obvious financial conflict of interests.

Fortunately the first source Google AI cites, from the FTC, provides better recommendations even if they don't actually enforce them. The other sources are divided between Social Media pages and public relations pages. Even though the Public relations pages try to portray themselves as authoritative and credible sources they have an obvious conflict of interests; and even though the Social Media pages don't appear to be so-called experts they're far more credible making rational claims that make sense. The FTC site says:
Section 5 of the FTC Act prohibits “unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce.” As the Commission set forth in its 1983 Policy Statement on Deception, a representation, omission, or practice is deceptive if it is likely to mislead consumers acting reasonably under the circumstances and is material to consumers – that is, it would likely affect the consumer’s conduct or decisions with regard to a product or service.2 .....

The Commission has long held the view that advertising and promotional messages that are not identifiable as advertising to consumers are deceptive if they mislead consumers into believing they are independent, impartial, or not from the sponsoring advertiser itself. Knowing the source of an advertisement or promotional message typically affects the weight or credibility consumers give it. Such knowledge also may influence whether and to what extent consumers choose to interact with content containing a promotional message.

This, of course, sounds very good, and there's more in the complete article that also sounds good, but if they actually enforced their regulations advertising as we know it would be virtually eliminated since it almost all violates these simple principles and so do Ads thinly disguised as News Stories which are flooding the media. The fact that there's so much deceptive advertising flooding the media shows that there's no real enforcement for any rules they make, and just looking at them is enough to confirm this. And, as I pointed out, you can check for yourself to see if you agree that the so-called experts with obvious conflicts of interests are more reliable than those without expertise or conflicts of interest from the links posted above or any search you choose to do.

I also followed up with questions about if there are fewer Black Friday brawls, which I already know is being reported much less often, and if there are any scientific studies about why they might have gone down assuming they did. Although Brawls and other big news stories seem less common, or at least aren't reported as often, some studies show shoplifting has gone up, not down, which implies other crimes might have gone up as well, or at least they may not have gone down as much as it appears. My impression is some of the following conclusions are accurate and can be confirmed independently, but others may be biased and doesn't make complete sense, as I'll explain below, but judge for yourself after reading some of this material.

Are there still as many Black Friday brawls, shootings, or other crimes at malls or big box stores as there were ten years ago? If not, why? 12/03/2025

No, highly publicized Black Friday brawls, stampedes, and shootings at malls and big box stores are less frequent than they were a decade ago. The "doorbuster" frenzy that often led to these incidents has largely diminished due to fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and retail strategy.

Reasons for the Decline in Incidents

The primary factors contributing to the reduction in these chaotic in-store events are:

Rise of E-commerce: The most significant change is the shift to online shopping. Consumers can find deals online without the stress, crowds, and competition for limited in-store items that historically caused friction.

Stretched-Out Deals: "Black Friday" is no longer a single day; promotions often begin weeks earlier (sometimes in "Black November") and extend through the weekend to Cyber Monday. This widens the shopping window and eliminates the need for consumers to rush the doors at the same time to secure a limited-time bargain.

Reduced "Doorbuster" Focus: Retailers have moved away from promoting a few extremely limited, highly coveted "doorbuster" items designed to create a frenzy. Instead, discounts are more spread out across various products and available both in-store and online, which helps manage crowd behavior.

Improved Store Management: Following numerous high-profile incidents and even OSHA guidelines, many retailers have implemented better crowd-control measures, such as organized lines, mobile checkout technology, and less aggressive promotional tactics to ensure a safer environment for both shoppers and employees.

Changing Consumer Psyche: Shoppers have become "desensitized" to the one-day hype and are more likely to shop with discipline, comparing prices and prioritizing value rather than getting caught up in the "mob mentality" that characterized past events. The idea of physically fighting strangers for a television now seems anachronistic to many.

While general retail crime, like organized shoplifting, has been a growing concern for retailers in recent years, the specific instances of spontaneous consumer-driven violence at physical stores on Black Friday have decreased significantly. Complete article

How Black Friday became a retail letdown: ‘To sustain the ride, they started to dilute it’ 11/28/2025

Fistfights and Long Lines on Black Friday? Not as Much Anymore. 11/23/2018 Black Friday used to be all about midnight fights, endless lines and major markdowns on televisions. Like the rest of retailing, so much has changed.

How Thanksgiving shrank down to the size of a screen 11/25/2025 I’ve never gotten in a fight at a Walmart on Black Friday, but I’ve come close. It was about 15 years ago, and I was visiting my parents back home in rural Illinois. My father wanted a new TV to watch baseball in his basement. He’d read about a Samsung model that was 25 percent off on Black Friday and found out they only had a dozen in stock. Those are gonna go fast, Dad said, which is how we found ourselves lined up on Thanksgiving night, jockeying for position, waiting for the stampede to begin. The clock neared midnight. My dad looked at me. Ready? I nodded back, lying. I wasn’t ready. Who could be?

When Black Friday Deals Turn Into Brawls And Injuries 11/28/2019 Some Of The Worst Black Friday Incidents In The United States Can You Sue After A Black Friday Injury? A comprehensive report by The Hustle in 2019, detailing the data behind the phenomenon, found that 69% of Black Friday incidents occur inside retail stores, where shoppers compete for limited supplies of goods. Roughly 20% occur at the store entrance as crowds pour through the doors, while 11% take place outside, where customers either race for parking spaces or drive on the roads tired after a long day of shopping.

External Theft Incidents Increased 19 Percent in 2024, Retail Report Finds 11/03/2025 Workplace Violence In 2023, 73 percent of respondents said shoplifters had exhibited heightened levels of aggression and violence, the NRF report said. Retailers noted the same or higher instances of violence-related events in their organizations in 2024 as in 2023, and 46 percent of respondents reported further increases in guest-related violence and violence during a crime, such as shoplifting. Looking at the next 12 months, retailers identified violence during a crime (17 percent), mass violence (11 percent), and guest violence (10 percent) as their top three concerns. Nearly all survey respondents said that violence-related theft has required them to increase employee workplace violence training, and 48 percent said that workplace violence has required them to implement measures that negatively affect the customer experience. More than a third said they have experienced labor challenges due to violence-related theft in their stores.

Black Friday is dying. Here's what's killing it — and what's replacing it 11/28/2025 Dynamic pricing has exploded. Retail experts say dynamic pricing and early “soft launch” discounts now replace one-day blowouts. “The prevalence of e-commerce has made deals and discounts more accessible and routine, causing marquee events like Black Friday to weaken,” said Greg Zakowicz, a retail analyst at Omnisend. “Because shoppers no longer have to wait for a singular day to take advantage of sales, their purchasing has become spread throughout the season.”

Study: Shoplifting Increased 93 Percent Since 2019; Violence Jumped 84 Percent Since 2022 12/17/2024 Retailers reported a 93 percent increase in the average number of shoplifting incidents per year in 2023 versus 2019 and a 90 percent increase in dollar loss due to shoplifting over the same period, according to a new study released by the National Retail Federation (NRF).

Black Friday Can Be Dangerous to More Than Just Your Bank Account 11/24/2021 This year will be no different. Millions of Americans are expected to shop Black Friday deals this Friday, November 26, as they make up lost time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though most will opt to shop online, countless will brave the crowds at actual stores. Bigger retail stores generally prepare for this shopping Armageddon tradition by hiring seasonal workers, opening their stores early and keeping the paramedics on speed dial. The sad reality is over the years, Black Friday mobs are getting rowdier, resulting in injuries and deaths. The Truth Behind Black Friday Deaths and Injuries. Black Friday-related incidents, resulting in deaths and injuries, are not just a myth. In the last 12 years, there has been an average of 44 separate Black Friday incidents resulting in 11 deaths and 108 injuries in the United States. Most of these incidents (69 percent) occur inside retails stores, where tension runs high among shoppers fighting over limited stocked items on sale. In some years (2011), there were dozens of incidents; other years (2015), there were none. The dramatic spike in 2011 can mostly be attributed to two in-store spraying incidents in the nation’s largest retailer, Walmart. In California, a woman sprayed other shoppers in the store over a Bratz doll in what was described as a customer-versus-customer shopping rage.

Black Friday Sets New Online Spending Record With $11.8 Billion In Sales 12/02/2025

The Most Common Crimes on Black Friday 11/06/2023 How Many People Died on Black Friday It is a shocking statistic. There are 12 recorded deaths from Black Friday crimes and related incidents in the US since the shopping event became mainstream, and there are also over 100 injuries recorded. If you are injured, a lawyer is essential to ensure that you get what you are entitled to and that you don’t have to pay for your own treatments unfairly. For most of us, it is hard to imagine Black Friday causing people to get violent enough to actually put someone at any sort of harm, but it happens. People can get enraged, and it doesn’t take too much for a “mob mentality” to kick in.

Study shows US shoplifting incidents up 93% between 2019 and 2023 12/18/2024 Retailers are intensifying efforts to safeguard individuals within their premises. More than two-thirds of retailers have augmented their investment in employee training to address workplace violence. The phenomenon of multi-person thefts is gaining momentum, with 62% of respondents indicating heightened concerns over small groups orchestrating thefts. Organised retail crime (ORC) remains a persistent issue, with 76% reporting increased worry over ORC-related shoplifting. Tracking capabilities revealed a 57% uptick in ORC incidents among retailers equipped to monitor such activities from 2022 to 2023. 94% of retailers emphasize the necessity for federal intervention to tackle organised retail crime effectively, and the NRF is lobbying for the passage of the Combating Organised Retail Crime Act to bolster cooperation among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

27% of shoppers will switch retailers, abandon purchase if they come across locked-up products: report 11/06/2024 More than half of consumers report seeing more merchandise locked up in stores in the past year, according to a recent survey from Numerator.

The hidden design problem behind every Black Friday deal 11/29/2025 How retailers evolved from preventing stampedes to fighting bots, and why fairness at scale is harder than it looks

Have there been many if any academic studies on retail violence, including during Black Friday to determine why it rises or falls, whether it's marketing practices, cutting employees, self-checkout, or something else? 12/03/2025

Yes, there have been several academic and industry studies on retail violence, including specific analyses of Black Friday, that explore its causes and fluctuations. Researchers have investigated a range of factors from marketing practices to staffing levels and the impact of technology.

Key Findings from Academic Studies

Marketing Practices and Scarcity: A prominent area of research focuses on how retailer strategies influence consumer behavior.

Studies from institutions like Arizona State University found that "limited-quantity" advertisements and "doorbuster" deals play a role in provoking consumer aggression.

The perception of scarcity, combined with the pressure to "win" a deal, can activate a "mob mentality" and competitive behaviors, as suggested by general aggression and consumer misbehavior models.

When shoppers expect to get a promotional item but are thwarted (e.g., the item sells out), they may perceive an inequity that leads to misbehavior.

Crowd Dynamics: Research has also explored the effect of large crowds.

One study found that while large crowds can actually have a positive effect if shoppers are expecting them, a single "bad seed" or an unexpected issue can trigger an aggressive incident that other shoppers may follow.

Early Black Friday incidents were often tied to the physical chaos of large crowds pushing through doors, especially at retailers like Walmart, which saw a disproportionate share of incidents a decade ago.

Staffing Levels: Understaffing has been linked to increased customer incivility and aggression.

A report from the Shift Project at the Harvard Kennedy School found that workplaces with self-checkout machines often lead to understaffed environments, making workers 14% more likely to experience disrespect from customers.

Worker surveys indicate that inadequate staffing during busy periods, such as the holidays, increases the risk of workplace violence because employees are overwhelmed and less able to manage disputes or provide adequate "guardianship".

Technology (Self-Checkout): The introduction of self-checkout (SCO) technology has been linked to increased theft (shrinkage) and changes in consumer morality, but also to customer frustration.

Customers frustrated with technology can exhibit aggressive behavior toward staff when issues arise, contributing to an overall rise in general retail worker harassment and violence reports in recent years.

In summary, academic research points to a combination of environmental factors (crowds, scarcity marketing) and operational factors (staffing, technology-induced frustration) as drivers of retail violence, with specific high-adrenaline Black Friday incidents giving way to more generalized, ongoing issues with customer incivility and theft-related aggression. Self-Checkout Machines Cause Retail Theft and Put Workers in Danger 08/14/2024 Researchers from the Shift Project at the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School released a report “Please Wait, Help is on the Way: Self-Checkout, Understaffing, and Customer Incivility in the Service Sector” that finds the deployment of self-checkout machines often leads to understaffed workplaces, resulting in more frequent occurrences of customer disrespect and bullying. Workers are 14% more likely to never or rarely be treated with respect by customers if self-checkout is in their stores.

Holiday Shopping Surge: Bracing for the Increased Retail Workplace Violence Risks 11/05/2024 Retail employers are bracing for the annual surge in customer traffic and sales during the holidays, but the large crowds, stress of the season, and other factors increase the risks of workplace violence. As the holiday season approaches, retail employers may want to consider steps to address the enhanced risk of workplace violence.

Measuring the Impact of Workplace Violence on Retail Staff and Retention 11/24/2025 Safety concerns on the job escalate, corresponding with material increase in reports of violence. More than one in three (35%) retail workers reported feeling unsafe at work, up from 27% in 2024. Reports of physical assault increased 22% year-over-year, while aggressive behavior from past employees and current coworkers jumped 28% and 26%, respectively. Nearly 40% of workers worry about theft and verbal harassment most or every time they go to work.

Customers have soured on self-checkout, and a new study says there’s proof 01/23/2024 Self-service machines were first introduced to lower stores’ labor expenses by shifting the work of paid employees onto unpaid customers. But retailers are rethinking self-checkout. They have found that self-checkout leads to higher merchandise losses from customer errors, and more intentional shoplifting than when human cashiers are ringing up customers. One study of retailers in the United States, Britain and other European countries found that companies with self-checkout lanes and apps had a loss rate of about 4%, more than double the industry average.

Why is violence more likely to occur in a store on Black Friday? Use evidence from the text to support your response. 07/09/2024 Violence is more likely to occur in a store on Black Friday due to the competitive and high-stress shopping environment created by retailers' optimal pricing strategies, limited availability of discounted items, and the pressure to outperform competitors, leading to aggressive behaviors among consumers.

First of all, it helps to keep in mind that Black Friday riots or brawls have been around for decades, and I remember avoiding them for most if not all of my life, but for some reason, which hasn't been fully explained that I know of, there was a massive surge in crime and reporting of crime during Black Friday weekend from about 2010 to about 2014, give or take a year or so, and it was so extreme that even traditional media had to report on it, and it was at a time when Social Media often began covering the News better when traditional media declined to do so.

Have the people in the corporate office been studying this on their own? Of course they are, it would be foolish not to, and we have a precedent showing that they do this and try to keep it secret. On one occasion they conducted a study to see if crime in the parking lot would be reduced if they hired a security guard to patrol it and found that it would, but, since the victims of that crime were the customers, not Walmart, they decided not to release it or hire security, showing they were more concerned with their own profits than the safety of the public, but it was leaked. And there have been numerous examples over the years where small leaks also showed they care more about profits than the safety of both their workers and customers, despite press statements to the contrary, in one case an employee came right out and told the victim of a crime that security was to protect Walmart property not customers. On top of that there have been numerous times where Walmart employees have tried to tell people they couldn't record crime problems, although this has been less common in recent years, so there's little doubt they study this for the purpose of increasing profits first, and safety second, if at all. When improving safety also increases profits they're more likely to do it than when it doesn't increase profits.

At the beginning they attribute some of the decline to an increase in E-Commerce, and a shift in advertising to spread sales throughout the month, which I previously pointed out is true, and makes sense. I also pointed out that while the surge in crime during Black Friday weekend was reduced as a result of this, it increased throughout the rest of the month. This may have been approximately ten years or so ago.

This reply admits that "Doorbuster" sales are a contributing factor and that they do them less often, but they haven't been completely eliminated, and most research may be under the control of corporations with a conflict of interest, and considered "proprietary" or secret, so they can use it when it helps to increase profits without letting people know if they're doing so at the expense of safety for both customers and workers. In many cases these sales may have been for items with limited to draw people in without selling a large volume of less profitable items, so they'll buy other items with higher mark-ups and profits. What this may mean is that consumers might have been inclined to fight each other over who gets the only item, and when this was more common there were often a lot of angry customers upset because they didn't get what they came for which was promoted on a large scale to draw them in. If angry customers resorted to violence or property destruction they would be held accountable to the rule of law, but there were few if any laws to hold corporations for their deceptive ads that lead to this.

But this practice hasn't come to a complete end, last month they had an absurd promotion selling an unusually large package of macaroni and cheese with enough small boxes to make it look the size of a big screen TV online, and people waited all night to order it when the sale was supposed to begin, but within minutes they ran out, although since it was online there were no physical fights or property damage, but it went viral.

They also attributed some of the decrease in riots to consumers no longer trusting deceptive ads anyway, which may be true, or at least partly true.

However, despite most claims that Black Friday Brawls or Riots are going down there's a recent study saying that there's a 93% increase in shoplifting and another one saying there's an 84% increase in violence, which seems to contradict these claims. But there are also claims that might be biased, in both directions, showing that it's going up or down; for example, Walmart has always tried to minimize coverage of their crime problems, because it might scare people off and reduce profits, while there are several Law Firms trying to attract clients by indicating riots are still as common as they used to be, whether they are or not. Without better research from unbiased sources it's hard to tell which is which.

I also asked if there were academic studies about this and Google AI said there were, even though I've seen hardly any reported in the media, and provided some sources listed above. These studies came to similar conclusions that I already described, including the fact that self-checkout is a major contributing factor, that many people are turning against this, but it's only being scaled back on a limited basis so far. When reviewing these studies it's important to keep track of the year they came out to recognize if crime is going up or down, of course.

However, few if any of the studies done about crime at Walmart or other Big-Box stores take much if any consideration about whether our current economic system, which encourages people to buy an enormous amount of products that do nothing to improve their quality of life is a contributing factor, or if it does more harm than good, whether it's crime, environmental destruction, or other factors, most which do far more harm to the poor than the rich. Even without good research there should be no doubt that buying products that don't improve the quality of life, including gifts for people they never use that are only bought as part of a ritual, cosmetic items including diamonds jewelry and other items that provide no true benefit, although there's an enormous amount of hype to convince us we need or want them, or the environmental destruction that goes along with this does far more harm than good.

Anyone that points out these inconvenient facts including environmentalists or those more concerned with the quality of life for the majority than profits for the rich are portrayed as "radicals" without addressing the issues, which would show they actually have a good point.

Without better research there' no way to know how much crime is changing in either direction, nor can we know for certain what the leading causes of it are, although in some cases, like self-check-out we have enough research to know it's making it worse. But it's not being reported as consistently as it used to be, although you can check for yourself some of the highest profile stories below, including a few strange incidents every month.

Have you ever tried to avoid police by jumping into a lake before realizing you can't swim?

How long is Senator John Kennedy going to drag out the story about radioactive shrimp? Now the other Senator from Louisiana is joining him.

Why shouldn't half a dozen people be allowed to shop while riding horses? The Horses may also want to shop.

Are a lot of middle aged women too embarrassed to ask where vibrators are or even buy them? They might save themselves embarrassment if they get away with shoplifting them, but this doesn't work when they get caught and their picture is posted on the internet nationwide.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in November 2025. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Pasta Sold in Popular Supermarket Chains, Including Walmart and Kroger, Recalled Due to Deadly Pathogen 11/05/2025

The FDA issues a warning to consumers after a Listeria outbreak leaves people dead and hospitalized.

A dangerous food contamination has left at least 6 people dead and 25 hospitalized. The Listeria outbreak linked to a pasta meal from Nate's Fine Foods is the culprit behind the lives lost, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The recall for the contaminated product was issued in June, after listeriosis-causing bacteria were found in several products, including pasta salads, scampi linguini bowls, trays of Alfredo, beef meatballs and marinara, and more. The product had reached big retail companies like Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart, and Trader Joe's, among others. The stores quickly initiated the recall process once the announcement was made.

But apparently, the affected products had already reached consumers who were unaware of the contamination. The Listeria outbreak was also announced in June, and as of today, it has spread across 18 states, infecting and killing people. Listeria is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, and it often spreads through food. The life-threatening bacteria are indeed harmful to humans, but elderly people, pregnant women, and those with a weak immune system are especially vulnerable to this disease, according to Mayo Clinic. A Wheelchair-Bound Walmart Shopper Wearing A Vest Was Mistaken For a Store Employee, And She Didn’t Try To Keep Her Patience 11/11/2025

This is why it’s important to pay attention to your surroundings, people!

And let this be a reminder to think before you speak, okay?

Check out this story from Reddit and see what you think about what happened.

“I’m generally confined to using a wheelchair due to a barrage of medical reasons.

I use a manual wheelchair, and the “Rascal” mobility aids that most stores provide. Due to many years of nearly being struck by hapless drivers in the Vancouver area of SW Washington State, I’ve taken to wearing “High-Vis” safety vests in various styles to at least prevent injury.

Oh, boy…

As you might imagine, some (though not all) supermarkets and stores around here use similar vests for their employees. This causes me to get mistaken for an employee all the time. So, on with the show. ......

“Hey. Why in the [censored] is the [censored again] customer service area closed?” Karen demands to know.

“Oh for ***** sake…” I think to myself. “I’m not sure, to be entirely honest.” I say aloud.

“Well why don’t you?! If you got time to sit on your ***, you’ve got time to work. So spill it.” She barks. There is a mild irony in her words, as I was drinking ice water from the attached Subway as she spoke.

“Well, because I don’t work here.” Complete article

Louisiana senators press Walmart to curb radioactive shrimp imports, support Gulf of America 11/12/2025

Louisiana U.S. Sens. Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy are pressuring Walmart and other major grocery store chains to curb "radioactive" shrimp imports and boost domestic shrimp options for consumers.

Cassidy and Kennedy wrote joint letters to the CEOs of Wal-Mart, Kroger and Albertsons following a series of recalls of imported shrimp that may have been exposed to the chemical element cesium-137 that emits radiation as it breaks down.

“Despite these numerous concerns, [you] continue to sell imported shrimp at your stores, rather than support domestic fisheries that offer a safer product while supporting small American businesses,” the Louisiana senators wrote in letters delivered Nov. 7.

Louisiana fisherman Acy Cooper, president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, said cheap imports that pose potential health concerns are threatening the domestic industry's future and a way of life passed down through generations. Complete article

Woman says Walmart Car Care in Hammond left part in her car after incomplete oil change 11/14/2025

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (WLS) -- A South Holland woman says she's dealing with an oil change dispute that's made her afraid to drive her car.

She believes a part is still stuck in the oil pan, but that part is nowhere to be found.

"I'm not satisfied at all," South Holland resident Yvette Walker said. "I'm afraid to drive the car. Because if that plastic melts in here, it's going to send particles and the breeze to the engine, which is going to harm the engine."

Walker said a Walmart Car Care in Hammond, Indiana on Cabela Drive never completed the oil change. She wasn't charged, but she did get a note saying an "oil straw" used to vacuum old oil out got stuck in her car's oil dip stick hole.

"Well it's a piece of plastic. So the first thing Walmart told me was it'll just melt," Walker said.

Walker says Walmart gave her a rental car for two weeks and paid mechanics at a certified dealership to investigate, but they were unable to find or remove that oil straw. She says she is keeping the car at the dealership lot until she gets more answers.

"I rightfully believe that Walmart should take full responsibility," Walker said. Complete article

Walmart changes return policy 11/25/2025

Americans get a ton of gifts that, well, don’t quite fit the bill.

According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. shoppers return some $743 billion in merchandise each year with holiday purchases making up more than 15% of that total. That makes late December and early January a prime time for returns and exchanges.

Thankfully, many major retailers tweak return policies during the holiday season. That’s just what Walmart has done to make returning those unwanted gifts easier.

Walmart typically allows 90 days after purchase to return most items. The exception are items sold through Walmart Marketplace, which have a 30-day return window, consumer electronics (30 days) and wireless phones (14 days). Complete article

People Are Begging Angry Walmart Shoppers to ‘Get a Life’ After Bizarre, Limited-Edition Food Item Sells Out in Just Seconds 11/29/2025

Walmart shoppers are fuming after a limited-edition food product sold out in just seconds on Black Friday.

The product in question, Kraft’s new 65″ box (designed to give the vibes of a flat-screen TV) filled with 65 boxes of its instant macaroni and cheese, was released online as a limited quantity novelty item at midnight on Nov. 28, 2025.

Kraft’s “Mac Friday Box” retailed for $19.37, a nod to the year Kraft was founded, and immediately piqued shoppers’ interest with its steeply discounted price of under $.30 per box. (Comparatively, each 7.25-ounce box currently costs around $1.39, depending on retailer.)

In an attempt to snag the item, many customers claimed they spent hours waiting on the Walmart website ahead of time so they could quickly add the item to their carts, only to be let down when it sold out in mere seconds.

“I literally had it in my cart and it sold out while I was hitting the finish button,” one such person wrote, in part, per New York Post.

“I’m so sad, stayed up for this and I literally have to work tomorrow,” another lamented, while a third pointed out it seemed like nobody “even got a chance to buy one” due to the exclusivity of the release. Complete article
